STATE OF ORIGIN JERSEYS

As Australia’s greatest set of grudge matches, the annual Rugby League State of Origin tournament played around May or June each NRL season, sees the top players in the country proudly wearing State of Origin jerseys as they represent their state in the biggest event on the Australian rugby league calendar.

The three match series is contended by two State of Origin teams, Queensland and New South Wales. Ever since the first State of Origin was played in Australia in 1980, players for the Queensland side have worn maroon jerseys and the New South Wales squad have run onto the field in blue jerseys; this is why you will often hear people talk about the Maroons taking on the Blues in State of Origin matches, as the teams are referred to by their respective jersey colours.

History of State of Origin Jersey Colours

State of Origin history is long and rich, with many rugby league historians making it a focus of their work.

These jersey colours for Queensland and New South Wales have been around long before the first State of Origin match was took place. In fact, the states wearing these specific colours of maroon and blue dates back even before the first interstate rugby league match between Queensland and New South Wales was played in 1908, to the days when the states wore these colours in rugby union.

The light and dark shades of blue seen on the New South Wales’ jerseys today are the traditional colours of the leading English universities, Cambridge and Oxford, where many of the original men of influence in rugby unions would have attended. These university colours made their way down to represent the sporting codes, and there was a time when Queensland wore blue as well!

New South Wales rugby teams have worn their now famous light blue coloured jerseys since 1892.

Queensland adopted maroon coloured jerseys, as we now see them in, in 1895. No one is quite sure why maroon was selected as the state’s representative colour, but there is some talk of it being associated with the colour of English royalty.

Whatever the reason, they’ve remained the same for a very long time! These are the colours we now know and love, with the nation is divided over whether they are a Maroon or Blue’s fan every Origin match!
